During the Summer of 2013 I began studying jewelry making with the intent to learn skills that would allow me to inlay objects into gourds without the use of adhesives. Little did I know that I would develop a serious liking to this art form. When working with stones I prefer more organic shapes. Nature does not create perfection in form so i think it is a good idea to follow in that idea. Sometimes a stone contains a hole or another imperfection that can be incorporated into a piece’s design. I often will seek stones with “character” because I am drawn to these and I think it makes for interesting art objects. I look forward to hearing your thoughts.

The stone is Ethiopian Well Opal, the metal is sterling silver. It is approximately 1.25 inches tall. This project is special to me because I was given the challenge to work with a really odd shaped rough opal. Instead of making a typical dome shaped cabochon, I freehand faceted it which allowed me to save much of the fire in stone and keep it as large as possible. Jul 11 ![]()
